Medium Term Plan - Health and Fitness - Year 8
Physical Education Resource Description
The Health and Fitness unit for Year 8, spanning six lessons, is designed to immerse students in fitness-based activities, enhancing their understanding of core techniques and the body's response to exercise. The aim is for students to engage with a variety of fitness skills testing their physical capacity, utilise health and fitness terminology, and comprehend the importance of warm-ups and cool-downs. Skills development is a key focus, with students expected to learn circuit movements, boxercise techniques, and the differences in running for speed versus endurance. The curriculum is structured to progressively build fitness techniques, understand body systems, and adapt to exercise, while also fostering various roles to support personal and peer learning.
Throughout the unit, students will be introduced to accurate replication of fitness activities, developing their physical and mental capacity to prepare for and recover from exercise. They will gain an understanding of components like oxygen debt and health-related fitness. Decision-making and problem-solving skills will be honed as students evaluate and refine techniques to enhance performance. Personal development is also a crucial aspect, with students learning about heart rate changes and the importance of staying healthy and active. Evaluating and improving their own and others' performances will be encouraged through self-assessment and reflection on the success criteria. By the end of the unit, students will have a deeper understanding of fitness movements, challenging physical capacity, heart rate and body functioning during exercise, and will have developed into reflective learners, with an awareness of potential careers in the sports industry.
