Medium Term Plan - Gymnastics - Year 8
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 8 Gymnastics Medium Term Plan, tailored for Key Stage 3 students, spans six lessons with the intent to enhance core gymnastic skills, such as flight-based movements and the use of various apparatus. Students will aim to achieve a blend of control, creativity, and aesthetic quality in their sequences. The programme is designed to deepen their understanding of gymnastic principles, including the replication of weight-bearing movements and the safe setup of equipment. Students will expand their gymnastic vocabulary, learning terms such as 'approximate', 'area', 'triangle', and 'perpendicular', and will be encouraged to use these during the course to express their understanding clearly.
Throughout the six-week course, students will engage in a variety of activities, starting with the basics of rotation and jumps, progressing to vaulting with low-level apparatus, and eventually developing routines for assessment. They will be challenged to build sequences in pairs or groups, increasing in complexity and requiring continual decision-making and evaluation for improvement. The plan emphasises the importance of accurate replication of movements, developing physical and mental capacity, and enhancing performance. Students will also focus on personal development, including communication and teamwork, while evaluating and improving their skills through peer and self-assessment. The impact of the course is measured through levels of mastery in replication of flight movements, aesthetics, control, body management, sequence development, and assessment capabilities, with an eye towards potential careers in the sports industry.
