Medium Term Plan - Gymnastics - Year 7
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 7 Gymnastics Medium Term Plan, intended for Key Stage 3 students, outlines a comprehensive six-lesson programme aimed at enhancing core gymnastic skills, stability, control, and creativity. The curriculum is structured to guide students through the exploration of fundamental movements such as travel, balance, and rotation, and to develop their ability to perform these movements both individually and in combination with partners. The plan emphasises the importance of understanding and applying safety measures when using apparatus. Students will work on a variety of skills including rolls, balances, cartwheels, handstands, and jumps, with the ultimate goal of creating and performing fluent sequences that demonstrate precision and aesthetic quality.
Throughout the six weeks, the lessons are designed to progressively build on the students' physical and mental capacities, encouraging them to make decisions, solve problems, and refine their performances based on feedback and self-assessment. This process is supported by a focus on developing physical literacy, creative thinking, and effective teamwork. Students will also engage in evaluating their own and their peers' performances, utilising computing tools to aid in the improvement process. By the end of the programme, students are expected to demonstrate a range of gymnastic movements with control and fluency, and to have developed an appreciation for the performance aspect of gymnastics. The plan also highlights the importance of instilling values such as tolerance and respect, and encourages students to remain healthy and active for life, pointing out enrichment opportunities within the school and community.
