Medium Term Plan - Badminton - Year 9
Physical Education Resource Description
The medium-term plan for Year 9 badminton at Key Stage 3 spans six lessons with the intent to enhance students' advanced techniques and strategic play to outwit opponents. The aim is for students to master both offensive and defensive elements in competitive situations, gain confidence in directing the shuttlecock to targeted areas, and independently score and officiate games. They will deepen their understanding of shot selection, spatial awareness, and tactical application within the game, alongside a firm grasp of the rules. Skills development is a central focus, with an emphasis on refining service actions, clears, drop shots with deception, flick shots, and smashes.
The sequence of learning is designed to build on fundamental skills, increasing the speed and challenge level. Students will engage in pressurised game situations to refine their tactical planning, make critical decisions, and evaluate outcomes for improvement. They will learn to outwit opponents by exploiting different court areas and develop both physical and mental capacities through warm-ups and understanding of game rules. The plan includes a range of activities, from warm-up exercises to mini-competitions, all aimed at developing shot accuracy, tactical awareness, and peer and self-assessment skills. The impact of the plan is measured through the development of tactical use of shots, replication of advanced skills, and the nurturing of reflective, creative, and self-managing learners, with an eye on potential careers in the sports industry.
