Medium Term Plan - Tag rugby - Year 6
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 6 tag rugby medium-term plan, intended for six lessons, aims to instil the core skills of tag rugby in students, enhancing their ability to perform under pressure and grasp the fundamental strategies of invasion games. The curriculum is designed to bolster decision-making capabilities, tactical understanding, and the application of game rules, all while fostering teamwork and leadership qualities. This is complemented by the development of physical and mental capacity, where pupils learn the importance of warm-ups for general fitness and the nuances of tag rugby rules, such as scoring and offside regulations.
As the scheme of work unfolds, students will progress from basic passing and receiving to more complex game play, including tagging and outwitting opponents. The lessons are structured to progressively challenge students by introducing opposition pressure and refining their skills through small-sided games. The educational journey culminates in a mini-tournament that encapsulates the knowledge and skills acquired, with opportunities for self-evaluation and peer coaching. Throughout this process, students will also explore the values of sportsmanship, respect, and the mental and physical aspects of staying healthy. Cross-curricular links are made with literacy and numeracy, and the impact of the lessons is assessed at three levels: beginning, developing, and exceeding, each with specific skill-based outcomes.
