Max Maths, Year 5, Try it, Improper fractions and mixed numbers
Maths Resource Description
In a section of the Max Maths curriculum aimed at Year 5 pupils, students are encouraged to engage with improper fractions and mixed numbers through a "Let's Try It" activity. The exercise begins with a visual element where students are presented with squares divided into equal parts, some of which are coloured. The task is to observe the coloured sections and select the correct mixed number that represents the shaded area. For instance, they might see a square with more than half but less than the whole square coloured in, and they need to decide which of the given options – such as 8 3/4, 4 4/5, 4 3/4, or 12 1/4 – accurately reflects the coloured portion.
The second part of the activity requires students to write the mixed number that corresponds to the coloured parts of various shapes. Unlike the first task, where options are provided, here students must analyse the shapes and determine the mixed numbers on their own. This could involve examining different shapes with various portions shaded and translating these into mixed numbers. To support their learning and provide further practice, students are directed to workbook (WB) pages 138 to 140, where they can find additional exercises and explanations to reinforce their understanding of improper fractions and mixed numbers.
