Max Maths, Year 2, Try it, Halves and quarters (2)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 2 curriculum, students are encouraged to explore the concepts of halves and quarters through practical examples involving everyday items like bananas, cherries, and cupcakes. In one of the exercises, children are asked to divide 14 bananas into two equal groups, helping them understand the idea of halving a number. They are then prompted to find out what half of 14 bananas is, which requires them to perform simple division and discover that each group will have 7 bananas.
Further engaging with the concept of fractions, the students move on to find out what a quarter of 8 cherries is. They are instructed to circle four equal groups to visually represent the division of the cherries into quarters. This hands-on activity helps them see that one quarter of 8 cherries equals 2 cherries. Another exercise asks them to determine what one quarter of 12 cupcakes is, enabling them to apply their knowledge to a different quantity and find that one quarter of 12 cupcakes is 3 cupcakes. These activities are designed to be completed with guidance from the workbook pages 114 to 115, providing a structured approach to learning about fractions.
