Max Maths, Year 2, Learn together, Addition within 100 with regrouping (2)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths programme for Year 2 students, the concept of adding two-digit numbers within 100 with regrouping is introduced in an engaging and interactive way. The lesson focuses on the practical method of using base-ten blocks to visually represent the numbers and help children understand the process of addition when it involves carrying over, or 'regrouping'. The students start by adding the ones, which is the rightmost digit in the two-digit numbers. This hands-on approach allows them to see the physical representation of the numbers and grasp the concept of regrouping more concretely.
When the sum of the ones exceeds ten, the children learn to 'regroup' by changing ten ones into one ten, which is then added to the tens column. For example, when adding 45 and 28, they would add the ones (5+8) to get 13. They would then regroup by changing the 10 ones into 1 ten, adding it to the 4 tens from the number 45 and the 2 tens from the number 28. This results in a sum of 73. This method helps children visualise the addition process and understand the concept of carrying over to the tens column, making it easier for them to perform addition with regrouping confidently and accurately.
