Long multiplication worksheet
Maths Resource Description
KS2Gems has crafted a set of activities for Year 7 students to practice and perfect their long multiplication skills. In Activity 1, students are encouraged to engage in a hands-on experience with mathematics by using digit cards, whiteboards, and pens. The digit cards are divided into two piles, one for four-digit numbers and the other for one or two-digit numbers. The children select a card from each pile and multiply the numbers using the formal written method, also known as long multiplication. After completing the calculation, they work together to verify the accuracy of each other's work, promoting collaboration and peer learning.
Activity 2 adds an element of critical thinking to the learning process. Students are given a mix of pre-prepared calculations, some of which are correct and others incorrect. Their task is to check the given calculations and, for those that are incorrect, they must not only correct them but also provide an explanation of the errors made. This activity helps to deepen their understanding of the multiplication process and fosters analytical skills. Finally, in Activity 3, students use a grid and digit cards ranging from 1 to 9 to arrange digits that will yield calculations meeting specific criteria, such as generating the largest or smallest product, or finding answers that result in even or odd numbers. Through these engaging activities, students work towards the objective of mastering long multiplication, a fundamental skill in mathematics.
