Converting between units worksheet
Maths Resource Description
Embarking on a journey to master the art of unit conversion, students will engage in a series of activities that sharpen their mathematical skills. In Activity 1, the task involves using random digit cards representing various units such as millimetres, centimetres, grams, and kilograms. Students must select two cards with differing units and convert one number to match the other's unit of measurement. Once the conversion is complete, they are to add and subtract the two numbers and then exchange their calculations with a partner for verification, ensuring a solid understanding of the conversion process.
Activity 2 challenges students to delve into the theoretical aspect of unit conversion, requiring no physical resources. They are tasked with writing detailed explanations on how to convert between different units, including millimetres to centimetres, centimetres to metres, metres to kilometres, grams to kilograms, millilitres to litres, seconds to minutes, and minutes to hours. To aid in comprehension, the use of diagrams is encouraged. After crafting their explanations, students will swap their work with another pair to test the clarity and accuracy of their instructions. In Activity 3, the students will select the most appropriate unit of measure for a given object or image and justify their choice, further reinforcing the practical application of their knowledge. Finally, Activity 4 builds upon the previous tasks by having each child select five digit cards with different units of measure. They must then use inequality symbols to order the cards, with partners checking each other's work, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of both the concept and application of metric measurement conversions.
