Order and compare numbers up to 1,000,000 worksheet
Maths Resource Description
In an interactive and dynamic maths activity aimed at enhancing a child's ability to order and compare numbers up to 1,000,000, the use of physical movement and visual aids comes into play. Activity 1 starts with distributing 5 or 6-digit number cards to each child, ensuring that the numbers remain a secret unless assistance is needed. The children are then instructed to disperse within a spacious area such as a hall, playground, or field. The teacher announces various criteria, prompting the children to position themselves accordingly – for instance, those holding a number smaller than 250,000 may be asked to stand to the right, and others to the left. After moving to their designated spots, the children form small groups to verify their numbers and confirm they are standing in the correct location. This activity is further enriched by having some children articulate their reasoning for their placement, enhancing their understanding of numerical order.
Building on the momentum, Activity 2 continues the learning journey. The children, already divided into four groups from the previous activity, are challenged to organise themselves in ascending numerical order. The complexity increases as two groups merge and must collaborate to maintain the ascending sequence. Eventually, all groups come together, forming a complete sequence of numbers, and participants are encouraged to explain their positions within this ordered arrangement. For an added twist, children can be asked to sort themselves silently, and to practice both ascending and descending orders. This hands-on approach not only meets the objective of ordering and comparing numbers to at least 1,000,000 but also promotes teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills.
