Fraction Calculations Spot the Mistake

A teaching resource designed for Year 4 students focuses on enhancing their understanding of fraction calculations through an engaging 'Spot the Mistake' activity. The PowerPoint presentation contains a total of 10 intentionally incorrect fraction calculations, split equally between addition and subtraction problems. Each slide presents a calculation that the students are challenged to scrutinise in three steps: identifying the error, explaining why it is a mistake, and then correctly performing the calculation themselves. The activity serves as an excellent tool for starting or concluding a lesson, or addressing common errors observed in students' work. For example, one of the slides shows the sum "3/4 + 2/4 = 5/8", which is incorrect because the denominators are the same and the numerators should be added directly. Another slide presents "10/7 - 2/7 = 8/0", which is a mistake because when subtracting fractions with the same denominator, only the numerators should be subtracted, and the denominator should never be zero.
