Place value in a four-digit number worksheet
Maths Resource Description
The worksheet is designed to help Year 6 students understand and recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number, which includes thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. The first activity requires students to have four-digit number cards and a large space such as a hall, playground, or field. Each child is given a card with a four-digit number and instructed not to share it with others, although adult support is available if needed. The children are then asked to position themselves according to various criteria related to the digits in their numbers, such as having a thousands digit greater or less than a specified number. After moving, they form small groups to verify each other’s positions and explain their reasoning, with the activity being repeated with different criteria to reinforce their understanding.
In subsequent activities, students use whiteboards and pens for a range of place value exercises. One activity involves deducing a hidden four-digit number from a set of clues provided by the teacher, such as the relation between different digits. Another challenges students to identify all possible four-digit descending numbers. A different activity has the class guessing a number the teacher is thinking of, within a specified range, by asking up to ten yes-or-no questions related to place value. There is also an activity where students try to determine a concealed number from a set of digits written in random order, using feedback on the accuracy of their guesses to refine their answers. Finally, an activity involves writing down five four-digit numbers and crossing out digits as they are called out by the teacher, aiming to be the first to cross out all digits in their numbers. These varied and interactive activities are all aimed at reinforcing the students' understanding of place value in a four-digit number.
