Ratio - Introducing the Ratio Symbol - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematical exercise designed for Year 6 students during the Spring term, learners are introduced to various concepts including ratios, fractions, and angles. The lesson begins with an introduction to the ratio symbol, where students are encouraged to become familiar with representing ratios in a standard form. This is followed by a 'Fluent in Four' revision section, which offers a series of quick-fire questions designed to test and reinforce their arithmetic skills. For example, they are tasked with calculating the product of 74 tens with an adjustment of 3 more, and then multiplying this by 13 ones minus 7.
The lesson then moves on to practical problem-solving scenarios. Students must calculate the number of empty cabins on a liner that has a capacity of 544 cabins, each accommodating up to 4 people, with a total of 2,100 people on board. By dividing the total number of people by the number of people per cabin, they determine how many cabins are needed and subsequently how many are left empty. In geometry, the focus shifts to calculating missing angles in a diagram where the angles of a quadrilateral are given, except for two, which students must deduce. Additionally, they explore fractions by determining what fraction of a set of counters is blue, enhancing their understanding of part-to-whole relationships.
