Ratio - Using Ratio Language - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of exercises designed for Year 6 students during Spring Term Week 10, the concept of ratio is introduced through a variety of engaging tasks. The "Fluent in Four" revision section tests students' numeracy skills with a focus on addition and understanding numerical values in different contexts. For instance, learners are asked to add large numbers, such as 4,589 and 417, and to comprehend the sum of quantities like 'eight thousands, 1 one and 89 tens' with 'fifty-nine ones and six hundreds'. Additionally, they are tasked with showing the difference between two temperatures, one from a rainforest room at 34℃ and the other from an arctic room at –22℃, using a number line to visually represent the 56℃ temperature difference.
The exercises continue with more arithmetic challenges that require students to complete calculations involving fractions and mixed numbers, reinforcing their understanding of basic operations. Another practical application of maths is presented in a problem where students must determine the length of fence needed to enclose a garden, as shown in a diagram. This real-world scenario encourages pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge to calculate perimeters. The activities not only build upon students' numerical fluency but also help them to connect mathematical concepts with everyday situations, enhancing their problem-solving skills and comprehension of ratios and proportions.
