Position and Direction - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
The Year 5 assessment on Position and Direction involves a series of tasks that test students' understanding of coordinates, shapes, and transformations. Initially, students are asked to plot given coordinates on a grid to draw a quadrilateral and identify its type, which is a rhombus. The assessment then progresses to more complex tasks such as reflecting a triangle across a mirror line and plotting a new point to complete the shape. Students must also demonstrate their comprehension of translations by describing the movement of points and completing translations for a set of given coordinates. For each correct translation, students are awarded marks, and they are also prompted to reflect on their confidence level in the subject matter.
In addition to plotting and translating points, the assessment includes activities where students must draw the mirror line for a reflected arrow and complete the coordinates of a translated point. They are required to describe the translation process, specifying the direction and distance of the move from one point to another. The assessment covers various aspects of position and direction, such as understanding the coordinate grid, identifying shapes, reflecting shapes, and performing translations. Marks are allocated for accuracy in plotting points, identifying shapes, and correctly describing and carrying out translations, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the students' grasp of these mathematical concepts.
