Properties of Shape - Quadrilaterals - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The starter activities for Year 5's Summer Term Week 7 focus on the properties of shapes, particularly quadrilaterals, and include a variety of mathematical exercises designed to enhance fluency in fundamental concepts. One of the tasks involves rounding numbers to the nearest hundred, where students are given a start number, such as 1,108, and asked to round it accordingly. Another exercise requires students to perform addition by combining numbers represented in different forms, like units, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. For example, adding 17 ones, 5 thousands, 3 hundreds, 9 tens, and 806 ones challenges students to apply their understanding of place value and addition.
Additionally, the activities include classifying different types of triangles as isosceles, scalene, or equilateral based on their side lengths, which is a key skill in understanding geometric shapes. Students are also presented with a table to complete, which may involve pattern recognition or applying mathematical operations. The exercises extend to more complex calculations, such as adding large numbers and working out multiplication problems followed by addition to consolidate the result. These tasks, such as calculating 25 × 22 and then adding various place value components, are designed to build students' confidence and competence in handling numbers and understanding the properties of shapes.
