Properties of Shape - Identify Angles - Starter
Maths Resource Description
As part of the Summer Term's curriculum for Year 5, students delve into the topic of Properties of Shape during Week 5, focusing on identifying angles and understanding their relationship with shapes. The starter activities for this week include a series of engaging exercises designed to sharpen the students' mathematical fluency. One of the tasks involves performing a calculation with place values, where students add together numbers composed of thousands, tens, hundreds, and ones. For example, they are presented with the problem of adding three thousands, four tens, two hundreds, and three ones to seven tens, nine hundreds, and eight ones, encouraging them to apply their knowledge of addition and the base-ten number system.
Another exercise involves interpreting part-whole models to find decimal and percentage values, enhancing their understanding of fractions and ratios. Students are also challenged to solve real-world problems such as calculating temperature changes. They must determine how much the temperature in Antarctica decreases over two days, starting from a baseline of –19ºC. This task not only tests their subtraction skills but also helps them grasp negative numbers and temperature scales. The session is rounded off with sentence completion exercises related to percentages, where they identify the proportion of shaded parts per hundred in a given diagram. These activities are carefully crafted to build the pupils' confidence and proficiency in dealing with numbers, shapes, and their properties.
