Decimals and Percentages - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
Year 5 students are assessed on their understanding of decimals and percentages through a variety of questions that test their ability to apply mathematical concepts in practical scenarios. For example, they are asked to match decimals to the value of underlined digits on a place value grid, which requires them to recognise the value of digits in different decimal places. They must also round numbers to the nearest tenth, convert decimals to fractions, and determine the fraction and percentage of a shaded area on a hundred square. Additionally, they are tasked with ordering the heights of children from tallest to shortest and calculating the fraction of a total, such as the number of men at a concert or the proportion of money spent by a character named Zach.
The assessment also includes real-life applications, such as Esin's progress in a one-kilometre race, where students must calculate the distance she has run and the fraction remaining. In the context of spending and budgeting, students work out how much money Zach has left after making various purchases. These exercises not only test the students' numerical skills but also their problem-solving abilities and understanding of how decimals and percentages are used in everyday situations. The assessment is designed to gauge the confidence level of students in their decimal and percentage skills, encouraging self-reflection on their mathematical proficiency.
