Fractions - Add Fractions within 1 (Activity) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
This activity is designed for Year 5 students in their Spring Term, focusing on Week 6, Day 3. It begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise, which aims to consolidate students' understanding of basic arithmetic and geometry. The tasks include multiplication problems such as 6 x 7, alongside practical applications of mathematics, such as finding the perimeter of a rectilinear shape. To aid in visualising and calculating the perimeter, each square on the provided grid is equal to 1cm by 1cm. Additionally, students are presented with money-related problems, where they are asked to round amounts like 767p and 707p to the nearest pound using a number line for assistance.
The second part of the activity delves into fractions, providing students with a series of addition problems within the unit fraction. Students are challenged to add fractions such as 5/8 and 3/8 and simplify their answers. The exercises are designed to reinforce the concept that when adding fractions with the same denominator, one simply adds the numerators. For example, adding 5/8 and 6/8 results in 11/8, which can be further simplified. The activity not only enhances students' skills in fraction addition but also emphasises the importance of simplifying fractions and understanding mixed numbers.
