Multiplication and Division (1) - Divide by 10 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The Year 5 curriculum for Autumn in the Multiplication and Division unit introduces students to the concept of dividing by 10 during the third week of the term. This session is designed to help students understand the National Curriculum objectives which include recognising and utilising square and cube numbers, mentally multiplying and dividing numbers by drawing upon known facts, and specifically multiplying and dividing whole numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. The key vocabulary for the unit encompasses terms such as cube numbers, dimensions, volume, and various multiplication and division-related words, including multiplication, division, product, and place value column.
During the lesson, children use practical resources such as place value counters, a place value grid, and base 10 blocks to visually and physically experience the process of division by 10. The lesson begins with a starter activity to recap prior learning, where students are reminded that multiplying by 10 involves moving digits one place to the left, and thus, they infer that dividing by 10 will move them one place to the right. Through a series of activities, students manipulate physical representations of numbers to divide by 10, observing the changes in value as the digits shift across the place value chart. The lesson aims to build fluency and deepen understanding through hands-on experiences and visual aids, with differentiated worksheets guiding students towards expected levels and greater depth. They are encouraged to reflect on the skills they've learned, the challenges they've faced, and the strategies that have assisted them, ensuring they retain the key concept of how division by 10 affects the value of numbers.
