Multiplication and Division (1) - Multiples - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The first week of the Year 5 autumn term introduces a key mathematical concept: Multiplication and Division, focusing on identifying multiples and factors. Students will explore how to find all factor pairs of a number and determine common factors between two numbers. The curriculum also covers the identification of prime numbers up to 19 and recognises the importance of understanding squared and cubed numbers, along with their respective notations. The lesson's key vocabulary includes terms such as multiples, product, arrays, multiply, common multiple, factors, prime number, composite number, and square number. These terms are crucial for students as they develop a systematic approach to recognising patterns in numbers and understanding the properties of multiplication and division.
The lesson unfolds with a starter activity that prompts students to recall their times table knowledge to identify multiples of whole numbers. They use concrete and pictorial representations to build their understanding. Through class discussions and activities, students learn to recognise patterns, such as all multiples of 5 ending in 0 or 5. They also engage in hands-on practice by rolling dice to generate and list multiples of the numbers they roll. Group work and independent activities, including differentiated worksheets, support students in applying their knowledge. The session ends with a plenary that encourages students to reflect on the skills they've used and the concepts they've learnt, ensuring they understand that multiples are products of whole numbers and the patterns they follow.
