Place value - Roman numerals - Starter
Maths Resource Description
Within the Year 5 Autumn Term curriculum, a variety of mathematical concepts are explored to enhance the students' understanding of numbers and shapes. The "Fluent in Four" revision segment focuses on arithmetic operations, such as division and multiplication, to bolster mental math skills. For example, students are tasked to find the missing number in a division equation that results in eight and to complete multiplications that are partially represented by number pieces. Additionally, they are asked to calculate the new temperature when the freezer, originally at -13°C, increases by five degrees, testing their ability to work with negative numbers.
Geometry is also a key component of the curriculum, with students using given criteria to describe shapes, such as identifying those with four equal sides or a certain number of acute angles. They are further challenged to plot points to create a square, reinforcing their knowledge of geometric properties. Roman numerals are introduced, translating modern numerical values into ancient Roman representations, like DCCLXXVIII for 778. Lastly, the concept of perimeter is addressed, where students calculate the total distance around rectilinear shapes, each square representing 1cm, enhancing their spatial awareness and measurement skills. This comprehensive approach ensures that students develop a well-rounded mathematical foundation.
