Fractions - Treasure chest - Practical Maths Activity
Maths Resource Description
Embark on an outdoor adventure with a practical maths activity that combines the excitement of a treasure hunt with the educational value of learning fractions. This engaging activity is designed for Year 2 students and aligns with the National Curriculum objectives for understanding and using fractions. To set up, divide the children into two teams and provide each with a treasure chest placed at the center of their area. The chests should be filled with objects that can be easily divided into parts, such as Lego pieces.
Each team is given a set of cards with various fractions written on them, ranging from "one half" to "three quarters." When a child draws a card, they must rush to their team's treasure chest and collect the precise fraction of objects specified by the card. Both teams perform this action simultaneously, adding an element of friendly competition to the activity. The first team to successfully use all their cards and collect the correct amounts wins the game. This practical exercise not only helps children recognise and write simple fractions but also allows them to understand the concept of equivalency, such as how 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2, all while engaging in a fun and dynamic outdoor activity.
