Fractions - Test tubes - Practical Maths Activity
Maths Resource Description
Engaging children in the study of fractions can be both educational and fun with a practical maths activity that transforms the classroom into a science lab. By roleplaying as scientists, children have the opportunity to visually explore and understand different fractions in a tangible way. The activity involves filling toy test tubes with varying amounts of water, each mixed with a unique food colouring. To represent different fractions, the amounts of water in each test tube are carefully measured, and markers are used to label these amounts directly on the test tubes, allowing children to see multiple fractions simultaneously.
Working in small groups, children are invited to observe the colourful test tubes and identify the fractions represented by the different water levels. For a more challenging variation, the test tubes can be left unlabeled, prompting the children to estimate the fractions themselves. This hands-on exercise not only solidifies their understanding of fractions but also encourages group discussion and estimation skills. The equipment needed for this activity includes toy test tubes, a variety of food colourings, and markers. By participating in this practical activity, Year 2 students will meet National Curriculum objectives by recognising, naming, and writing fractions such as 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, and 3/4, relating to lengths, shapes, sets of objects, or quantities.
