Fractions - Playdough 2 - Practical Maths Activity
Maths Resource Description
In this engaging Year 2 practical maths activity, students are invited to explore the world of fractions in a hands-on manner using play dough and cookie cutters. The National Curriculum objectives targeted in this lesson are for students to recognise, find, name, and write fractions such as 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects, or quantity. By manipulating the pliable material into various shapes and then dividing them into fractions, children gain a concrete understanding of how parts make up a whole.
To add an element of excitement and challenge to the lesson, a scavenger hunt is incorporated. Teachers are encouraged to create a variety of shapes using materials like play dough, plasticine, or clay, and then cut these shapes into different fractions, such as halves and quarters. These sections are then hidden around the classroom, while the remaining parts of the shapes are displayed on a table. Children are given a set amount of time to hunt for the missing pieces and then match them to the shapes on the table. This activity not only reinforces their knowledge of fractions but also provides a stimulating and enjoyable learning experience. The ultimate goal is for the children to successfully reassemble the shapes, thereby demonstrating their understanding of fractions in a tactile and memorable way.
