Mass and capacity - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
The Year 3 assessment on Mass and Capacity provides a series of questions designed to test pupils' understanding of measuring weight and volume. The first task asks students to identify the most suitable unit of measure for the weight of a tea bag, with options such as grams and kilograms. They must also visually represent the mass of four plums on a scale, applying their knowledge that one plum weighs 20 grams to calculate the combined weight. Another question challenges them to determine the mass of a carrot, requiring a written response in grams.
Further tasks involve practical scenarios, such as calculating the remaining amount of paint in a bucket after some has been poured into a jug, with measurements provided in both litres and millilitres. Students are also asked to express their confidence in the subject matter on a scale from one to five. In another exercise, they must figure out how much water is left in a bottle after pouring out several glasses, each containing a specified volume. The assessment includes comparative exercises where pupils use symbols to show relationships between different masses and capacities, enhancing their comprehension of units of measure and their ability to perform basic operations with them.
