Addition and subtraction - Add two-digit numbers - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 3 mathematics lesson focused on addition and subtraction, students are challenged with a variety of exercises to enhance their fluency in working with two-digit numbers. The lesson, set in the Autumn Term during Week 6 on Day 3, starts with a "Fluent in Four" revision activity. Pupils are tasked with filling in missing numbers, such as finding a number that when multiplied by 7 equals 35, and solving problems that require them to calculate totals using bar models. They are also asked to observe and articulate the similarities and differences between various calculations, for example, identifying what needs to be added to 554 to achieve totals of 558 and 594, or what needs to be subtracted from 554 to get 154.
Additional exercises include working with money, where students must determine the missing amount of pence to make totals when combined with other coins, such as finding how many pence are needed in addition to 8p to make £1 and 8p. The lesson also incorporates a practical understanding of turns and angles, where students must match different types of turns, like a half turn clockwise or a three-quarter turn anticlockwise, to their correct descriptions. To further develop their numerical skills, they are given multiplication and division challenges, such as finding half of a product or doubling a given number. These varied activities are designed to strengthen the students' mental arithmetic and problem-solving abilities in a fun and engaging way.
