Time - Compare durations of time - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging maths activities for Year 2 pupils during the Summer Term's Week 8, children are encouraged to sharpen their arithmetic skills through a variety of exercises. One task involves comparing durations of time, where students must fill out a table with start and end times to calculate the duration that has passed. They are also challenged with division problems, such as dividing a pack of sweets into jars, requiring them to apply their understanding of grouping to determine the number of jars needed. Additional exercises include solving subtraction problems and determining half of given numbers, all aimed at enhancing their fluency in fundamental mathematical concepts.
The activities continue with problem-solving tasks that require the use of counters or objects to form equal groups, testing the pupils' ability to divide and distribute items evenly. They are also presented with digit cards to find different ways to complete a number sentence, promoting their understanding of addition. To further develop their time-telling skills, students are tasked with finding the three shortest times from a given set of durations. These varied exercises not only reinforce their numerical skills but also encourage logical thinking and the application of mathematical formulas in practical scenarios.
