Time - Writing the time - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the second week of the Summer term, Year 2 students are set to advance their understanding of time through a series of engaging activities. The National Curriculum objectives for this week are to tell and write the time to five minutes, understand the concept of quarter past and to the hour, and to be able to draw the hands on a clock face to show these times. Additionally, they will learn about the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day, and will compare and sequence intervals of time. The key vocabulary for this unit includes terms related to time such as second, minute, hour, as well as phrases like 'o'clock', 'half past', and 'quarter past'. These terms are crucial for the children to grasp the lesson's content, and resources such as vocabulary cards and definitions are available to support their learning.
The lesson begins with a recap of previous learning and a discussion that helps students differentiate between units of time, such as hours, minutes, and seconds. They will use practical tools like stopwatches to measure the duration of activities and will engage in partner talk to reinforce their understanding of the vocabulary. The class will participate in outdoor activities, where they will record how many times they can perform certain actions within 20 seconds. Following this, they will work in small groups to categorize different activities by the appropriate time measurement unit. To consolidate their learning, the students will complete independent worksheets and then regroup for a plenary session consisting of reasoning activities and discussion questions. The lesson also includes strategies for differentiation, ensuring that all students, regardless of their level of understanding, can confidently measure and write time, and recognize the duration of various activities.
