8 Times Tables - Remainders
Maths Resource Description
The "Remainders" game is an engaging way to practice the 8 times tables with an added twist of calculating remainders. Each player requires a counter and a dice numbered from 1 to 6. The game is played on a special "Remainders Board – 8s," which features a series of numbers laid out in a path from the start to the finish. Players take turns to roll the dice and advance their counter accordingly. Upon landing on a number, the player must divide it by eight, aiming to break it down into 'ten lots and the rest' to simplify the calculation. The remainder from this division is the player's score for that turn.
The objective of the game is to accumulate the highest score from remainders. A player's turn involves strategic thinking; for example, landing on the number 153 requires the player to divide 153 by 8. By partitioning the number into multiples of ten lots of 8 (which is 80), they are left with 73. Further breaking it down, 9 lots of 8 equals 72, leaving a remainder of 1. This remainder is what the player scores for that round. The game concludes when the first player crosses the finish line, and the winner is the one with the highest total score from all their remainders. This fun and competitive game was created by Buzzard Publishing and is part of the "Get The Buzz Games For Tables" collection.
