Round and Calculate
Maths Resource Description
The 'Round and Calculate' game is an engaging activity designed to help learners practice rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole number. To participate, each player will require a pair of 0-9 dice and a blank number line labelled from 0 to 20. The objective of the game is to reinforce the concept of rounding while also providing an opportunity to work with basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction.
During the game, players take turns rolling the dice to generate two decimal numbers. These numbers are then rounded to the nearest whole number. For instance, if a player rolls a 3.4 and a 6.7, these would be rounded to 3 and 7, respectively. Players then decide whether to calculate the total or the difference of their rounded numbers and plot the result on the number line. The game introduces a competitive element by allowing players to 'lose a life' if the number they need to plot has already been taken on the number line. The game continues until one player loses five lives, with the winner being the one who has successfully plotted the most points. The game also includes a discussion element, encouraging players to talk about which two whole numbers a decimal lies between and to understand the rules of rounding, where numbers with a tenths place of 5 or higher round up, while those with 4 or lower round down.
