Fractions of Cube
Maths Resource Description
The educational game "Fractions of Cubes" is designed to help students learn how to find fractions of quantities in a hands-on and interactive manner. To prepare for the game, participants will need a set of counting cubes and a specially labelled 1-6 dice. The numbers on the dice correspond to different fractions, with the exception of 1, which prompts a re-throw, and 6, which means the player must skip a turn. The fractions represented are ½ for a throw of 2, 1/3 for 3, ¼ for 4, and 1/5 for 5.
To begin the game, players count out five separate piles of cubes with quantities of 10, 12, 18, 20, and 24. Players take turns rolling the dice and then selecting one of the piles to take a fraction of cubes from, based on the number they rolled. For example, if a player rolls a 4, they would take ¼ of the pile with 24 cubes, which would equal 6 cubes. The game continues until there have been three instances where a player cannot take their turn because the fraction of the chosen pile cannot be divided equally. The objective of the game is to collect the most cubes. Throughout the game, players are encouraged to discuss the concept of sharing into equal groups and to observe which numbers can be divided exactly by the fractions indicated on the dice.
