Decimal Step Up - Counting on

Decimal Step Up is a fun and educational game designed to help players practise counting on in decimal increments. To prepare for the game, participants will need a 0 – 9 dice. The game involves using the dice to establish a starting number and then determining the size of the steps to count on from that number. For instance, if a player rolls a 4, their starting number will be 0.4. Players then take turns rolling the dice again to determine the 'step' size, and from their starting number, they will count on three steps of the size indicated by the dice roll.

For example, if a player begins at 0.4 and then rolls a 6, they will count on in steps of 0.6, moving to 1.0, then 1.6, and finally 2.2. The game continues with players alternately rolling the dice and advancing in steps until one player surpasses the number 10. During the game, players are encouraged to discuss strategies for adding the steps efficiently, such as jumping to the next whole number before adding the remaining amount. To assist with tracking progress, players might find it helpful to use a number line or to make connections with whole number addition, like how 1.6 + 0.6 is analogous to 16 + 6 equalling 22. The winner is the first to go beyond the number 10, making for an engaging way to improve decimal addition skills.
