Decimal Rounding
Maths Resource Description
Decimal Rounding is an engaging mathematical game designed to teach players how to round decimals effectively. To participate, you'll need a 0 – 9 dice. The game is played by taking turns to roll the dice, which will determine a number comprised of units, tenths, and hundredths. Once you have your number, you must decide whether it's more strategic to round it to the nearest tenth or to the nearest whole number to maximise your score. For example, if you roll 4.47, you could round it up to 4.5 (to the nearest tenth) or down to 4 (to the nearest whole number). In this case, rounding to 4.5 would yield a higher score.
The objective of the game is to accumulate the highest total score after five rounds. Throughout the game, players should discuss which two numbers their decimal is positioned between before deciding whether to round up or down. For instance, the number 4.47 is between 4 and 5, as well as between 4.4 and 4.5. Remember, when rounding, digits 5 to 9 are rounded up, while digits 1 to 4 are rounded down. So, a number like 4.25 would round up to 4.3 (to the nearest tenth) or down to 4 (to the nearest whole number). This game not only helps to solidify understanding of decimal rounding but also encourages mathematical discussion and strategic thinking.
