Between Thousandths - Compare Decimals
Maths Resource Description
In the game 'Between Thousandths', students learn to compare decimal numbers in a fun and interactive way, using a 0-9 dice. The aim of the game is to develop a deeper understanding of decimal places, ranging from units to thousandths. To begin, each player needs a dice to generate their numbers. Player 1 starts by rolling the dice to create a decimal number with units, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. There's an option to choose the value of each digit or take them in the order they're rolled, for example, 4.528 and 7.349.
Player 2 then takes their turn to roll the dice, aiming to create a decimal number that falls between the two numbers Player 1 generated. With digits like 1, 2, 5, and 7, Player 2 might form the number 5.127, which indeed fits between Player 1's numbers. If successful, Player 2 scores a point. The players swap roles and the first to reach 5 points wins the game. It's beneficial to use a number line to visualise the comparison process, starting with the units and moving to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths as needed to determine the order of the numbers.
