More Sums and Differences - Add/Subtract multiples of 100
Maths Resource Description
In an educational game titled "More Sums and Differences," students are encouraged to practice adding and subtracting multiples of a hundred. The objective of the game is to help students understand and become comfortable with manipulating larger numbers, specifically those in the hundreds, and to see the patterns between single-digit addition and subtraction and their hundred-multiples counterparts. For this activity, children will need dice that either display multiples of 100 or the numbers 0 to 9, and a blank number line that ranges from 0 to 2000.
The game is played by taking turns to roll the dice to generate two multiples of a hundred. Each player then has the choice to either add or subtract these numbers. Once they have calculated the total or the difference, they will plot this result on the number line. For instance, if a player rolls a 400 and a 700, they could add these together to make 1100 and mark this point on the number line, or they could calculate the difference, which would be 300, and plot that point instead. The aim is to be the first player to have four of their points marked on the number line consecutively, without any of the opponent's points interrupting the sequence. This game not only strengthens arithmetic skills but also highlights the connection between basic single-digit number facts and their corresponding multiples of ten, enhancing the students' number sense and mental calculation abilities.
