Make 20
Maths Resource Description
"Make 20" is an engaging educational game aimed at helping children learn and reinforce number facts that add up to 20. Suitable for young learners, the game requires a 0-9 dice, a Teens board filled with numbers ranging from 10 to 19, and counters for each player. The objective of the game is to promote mental arithmetic skills in a fun and interactive way.
To play, participants take turns rolling the dice to generate a single-digit number. Players must then calculate the number needed to add to their roll to make 20 and place a counter on the corresponding number on the Teens board. For example, if a player rolls a 7, they would cover the number 13 on the board. A roll of 0 prompts a re-roll. The game continues until a player successfully places four of their counters in a straight line—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—and is declared the winner. The game also encourages discussion about the mathematical relationship between pairs of numbers that sum to 10 and those that total 20, highlighting that one number in the pair is always 10 more than the other, such as 4 + 6 = 10 and consequently 14 + 6 = 20 or 4 + 16 = 20.
