Halve or Double
Maths Resource Description
The game "Halve or Double" is an educational activity designed to help learners practice the mathematical concepts of halving and doubling numbers. Suitable for players of all ages, the game requires a set of cards numbered from 0 to 20, which should be shuffled and placed face down to create a deck, as well as a number line ranging from 0 to 40 for plotting the results of each turn.
During gameplay, participants take turns drawing the top card from the deck and making a decision to either halve or double the number shown on the card. After performing the calculation, they then mark the resulting number on the 0 to 40 number line. For example, if a player draws a card with the number 16, they can choose to halve it to 8 or double it to 32, and then plot the chosen number on the line. The game can be adapted for younger players or to increase difficulty by allowing halving only for even numbers, which avoids dealing with fractions. The objective of the game is to be the first player to plot four points on the number line without any points from the opponent in between them. Throughout the game, players discuss the processes of halving by dividing by 2 and doubling by multiplying by 2, as well as identifying odd and even numbers, enhancing their numerical understanding and strategic thinking.
