What the Romans did for us - Presentation task
History Resource Description
The Romans, known for their vast empire and enduring cultural impact, left a significant legacy in Britain, particularly in the realms of language and numeracy. Before their arrival, literacy was not widespread in Britain, but the Romans changed that by recording their history, literature, and laws. Latin, the language of the Romans, became widely used in Britain, influencing the English language we speak today with many words derived from Latin. Additionally, the Romans introduced their number system, elements of which are still recognized in modern times.
As part of the exploration into the Roman influence on Britain, students are tasked with researching the Latin origins of English words and familiarizing themselves with the Roman numeral system. The research involves listing words with Latin roots and writing numbers one to ten, as well as the numerals for 50, 100, 1,000, and 1,000,000 in Roman format. Furthermore, students will work in groups to become experts on various Roman contributions to British society, such as Roman baths, aqueducts, food, sanitation systems, and the introduction of coinage. Each group will create a presentation on their assigned topic, aiming to educate their classmates in an engaging and memorable way about how the Romans improved life in Britain and the lasting changes that occurred from the end of the Iron Age to the end of the Roman occupation.
