Which God has the most influence - Challenge
History Resource Description
In an engaging classroom challenge, students are tasked with exploring the impact of the ancient Greek gods on Greek society and culture. Students form groups of four and each member selects three gods from the pantheon to investigate in depth. The goal is to delve into the history and mythology surrounding these deities, uncovering how they shaped the lives and beliefs of the ancient Greeks. This research is not just an individual pursuit; each student is responsible for sharing their findings with the rest of their group, ensuring a collective learning experience.
Following the research phase, the groups reconvene for a feedback session where each student presents their case, arguing why their chosen gods should be considered the most significant and influential in ancient Greek society. The presentations are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding and persuasive skills, as they aim to convince their peers of their gods' importance. At the conclusion of these sessions, the group collaboratively ranks their gods from most to least influential, resulting in a top three. The collective decisions from all groups are then amalgamated to determine the class-wide ranking, ultimately crowning an overall winner, a runner-up, and a third-place deity. This activity not only enhances knowledge of Greek mythology but also encourages critical thinking about the cultural and historical impact of religion on ancient civilizations.
