Writing to Entertain - Lesson 6 - Main Clause Worksheet
English Resource Description
In a lively and engaging lesson on sentence structure, students are introduced to the concept of the main clause—a crucial component of English grammar. The main clause, also known as the independent clause, is the part of a sentence that can stand alone as a complete thought, containing both a subject and a verb. To help students identify main clauses, they are presented with a series of sentences where their task is to highlight the main clause.
For example, in the sentence "The old woman sat on the park bench, her feet were red and blistered," students would identify "The old woman sat on the park bench" as the main clause because it expresses a complete thought. Similarly, in "Daniel, who was the bravest of the group, knocked on the door," the main clause is "Daniel...knocked on the door," despite the additional information provided in the relative clause. Through various sentences, ranging from simple scenarios like Amir tripping over the carpet to Sarah's achievement in netball, students practice pinpointing the main clause, thereby enhancing their understanding of sentence structure and improving their writing skills.
