Using the Senses - Lesson 3: Words and Pictures - PowerPoint
English Resource Description
In the third lesson of a series on using the senses, English teaching resources are provided to help students enhance their descriptive writing skills. The lesson, titled 'Words and Pictures', encourages students to look at various images and engage their senses to imagine what they might experience if they were present in the scene depicted. The objective is to inspire students to think creatively and come up with 'wow words' or phrases that vividly describe the image, capturing what one might see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.
For example, when presented with a picture of a coastal scene, students might say they can see grey clouds, hear the crashing waves, smell the fishy scent of the harbour, feel the water's spray, and taste the salty air. They are then asked to write down their descriptive words in a table format, considering each of the five senses. This exercise not only stimulates the students' imagination but also promotes the use of sensory language in their writing. After completing the task, students have the opportunity to share their descriptive words with the rest of the group, fostering a collaborative learning environment where they can learn from each other's observations and vocabulary choices.
