Inspired by: Tiddler - Week 6
English Resource Description
In a charming lesson inspired by Julia Donaldson's "Tiddler," children are encouraged to delve into the imaginative world of a diver exploring the ocean depths. The lesson is designed to teach the use of question marks in writing. Students are prompted to step into the shoes of the diver depicted in the story's illustrations and consider their emotional response to the underwater sights. They are then asked to articulate these thoughts, feelings, and inquiries in a structured format within 'The Diver's Notebook.' This notebook is divided into sections where they can list what they see, their emotions, any questions that arise during their exploration, and any other observations. This activity not only fosters creativity and empathy but also hones their understanding of how to frame questions effectively.
Building on their reading and speaking skills, the children are then tasked with writing a postcard as if they were Tiddler, recounting his oceanic escapades to his cousin Tiny who lives in the sea around The British Isles. Unlike Tiddler, Tiny has never encountered sharks, turtles, dolphins, shipwrecks, or treasure chests, and his friends are far from being mermaids. The children are invited to imagine what Tiddler might share about his latest adventure and write this in a postcard format. This exercise not only allows children to practise reading their writing aloud clearly to be heard by peers and the teacher but also enhances their narrative skills and ability to express experiences from different perspectives.
