Spelling - Home learning - Sound y
English Resource Description
For home learning centred around the sound 'y', students are provided with differentiated spelling lists that include a variety of words for them to master. Each list contains words that end with the 'y' sound, such as 'very', 'family', 'happy', and 'memory', among others. To add an extra layer of challenge, a 'challenge word' is included in each list, which in this case is 'penalty'. Additionally, blank boxes are available for educators or parents to add any further words they deem appropriate for the children to learn.
The 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method is employed as a strategy to reinforce the spelling of these words. This technique encourages children to first look at the word, say it aloud, cover it, attempt to write it from memory, and then check their attempt against the correct spelling. This process can be repeated, with a space for noting any corrections needed. For further engagement with the sound 'y', reading and matching activities are included, where students match words to pictures, and are prompted to write sentences using the words they've learned. To distinguish between real and made-up words, a 'Real and Nonsense words' activity is also provided, where children identify real words, use them in sentences, and 'pop' the nonsense words by marking them with a cross.
