In Year 5, students delve into the historical world of the Anglo-Saxons, exploring who they were and the lasting impact they have on contemporary society. Towards the culmination of their learning journey, children are encouraged to showcase their understanding by presenting their findings to their classmates. This presentation serves as an opportunity to not only demonstrate their knowledge but also to refine their public speaking and presentation skills. Various methods can be employed for these presentations, including the use of PowerPoint slides prepared by staff to illustrate the ongoing learning and insights gained throughout the topic.

Working in small groups of no more than six, the children are tasked with creating a presentation on a specific aspect of Anglo-Saxon life and culture. They may choose from a range of subjects such as the famous Sutton Hoo burial site, the influential King Alfred the Great, the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the systems of law and order prevalent during those times, or the concept of Wergild—an early form of legal compensation. By engaging in this activity, students not only deepen their understanding of the historical topic but also enhance their collaborative and communicative abilities, starting their presentations with a confident greeting and a clear introduction to the topic they are about to unfold.
