Who is the fittest in our class? - Investigation instructions
Science Resource Description
In an engaging classroom investigation, students are tasked with determining who is the fittest in their class by setting up a fair test focused on fitness. Working in small teams of three or four, they begin by discussing and defining what constitutes a fair test. From there, they must carefully select a range of activities that not only challenge but also accurately measure the different aspects of fitness, specifically stamina, strength, and speed – collectively known as the 3S's. Each group is responsible for organising these activities while ensuring they fall under the appropriate categories of the 3S's.
Once the activities are chosen, the class collaborates to determine the most sensible tasks that will effectively represent the 3S's. The groups must also decide on a systematic method for recording their efforts to ensure consistency and fairness in the assessment. The activities are then set up according to the agreed-upon structure, and the students record their performance in each task. This investigative exercise not only sparks curiosity about physical fitness but also raises awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy body. The challenge culminates in a fun and educational reveal of the fittest individual in the class, as determined by the fair test criteria established by the students themselves.
