Progression pedagogy - Mayans - Year 5
History Resource Description
In the Year 5 curriculum exploring the ancient Maya civilisation, students embark on a journey of discovery to understand who the Maya were and the significant contributions they made that we continue to learn from today. This unit of learning is meticulously structured to enhance the pupils' ability to acquire and retain knowledge through a systematic approach known as 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it'. This progression pedagogy is designed to ensure that children not only learn facts but also deeply understand and remember the information about the Mayans long-term.
The learning process begins 'before the learning', where connections are made with prior knowledge, setting the stage for new information. 'During the learning', students actively engage with the content, building their understanding of the Maya through various interactive and educational activities. 'At the end of the learning', assessments are conducted to evaluate the knowledge gained. This is followed by 'after the learning', where the focus is on consolidation and ensuring the information 'sticks'. The 'Five stages of learning and remembering' framework, available on the Focus Learning Challenge website, provides detailed guidance on implementing this pedagogical approach, aiming to maximise the pupils' opportunities to know more and remember more about the Maya civilisation.
