Word sorts - Kenya
Geography Resource Description
Word sorts are an engaging educational activity designed for Year 2 students to explore and learn about Kenya. In this exercise, children work in pairs to discern which words from a given list are associated with Kenya and which are not. The list includes a mix of words such as 'mango', 'New York', 'London', 'Masai Mara', 'drought', 'apples', 'cheetah', 'dogs', 'Asia', 'Nairobi', 'Africa', and 'Atlantic'. The task encourages discussion and collaboration, as each pair must decide on six words that they believe are related to Kenya and six that are unrelated. They score one point for every correct identification.
Once the pairs have made their selections, they are instructed to put a circle around the words that are connected to Kenya, helping to reinforce their understanding of the country's geography, culture, and wildlife. This activity not only aids in vocabulary development but also prompts children to consider the broader question: "How different would my life be if I lived in Kenya?" This reflective question is designed to encourage curiosity and empathy, allowing students to contemplate the diverse lifestyles and environments found around the world compared to their own. The word sort activity is a creative way to integrate geography and social studies into the curriculum, provided by Focus Education (UK) Ltd.
