Dance 2 - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Year 5 Dance 2 series, students are set to learn and perform basic Street Dance moves with a focus on arm positions and movement actions. The lesson's learning objectives aim to have students explore and repeat a range of actions with coordination, respond to a beat using music, and use choreographed movements and patterns as a whole class. They will also work within groups to create short dance sequences. Success criteria include the ability to link actions with coordination, respond rhythmically to music, and perform choreographed and self-created dance sequences. Key vocabulary terms such as 'phrase', 'sequence', 'stance', 'musicality', and 'choreographed' are introduced to enrich the students' dance terminology.
The lesson begins with a warm-up session where the teacher sets out a dance zone and models different travelling steps, such as skipping and galloping. Students are encouraged to tap rhythmically to a beat on different body parts, moving from feet to hands. The main part of the lesson involves the teacher reminding students about Street Dance and having them rehearse basic moves from the previous lesson. Students then work in groups to create their own dance phrases, incorporating movements like the Shoulder Brush, Chest Pop, and Arm Wave. The lesson concludes with a performance of the group routines, followed by a cool-down session that includes the 'Taps' activity from the warm-up and stretching exercises on gymnastic mats. Breathing exercises are also incorporated to help students relax and focus on the rise and fall of their stomachs with each breath.
